neco has started the drafting of the projects for the improvement of the RAILWAY capacity of the "LAST MILE" and the RAILWAY CONNECTION WITH THE PORT FACILITIES LOCATED IN THE PORT OF ALGECIRAS BAY. Projects that aim to provide the Port's current railway infrastructure with different elements to improve operational management and at the same time promote intermodality.

With these actions, Algeciras will be able to handle 750-meter freight trains at the Isla Verde Exterior railport terminal by extending the lengths of useful track available at the terminal. In addition, the construction of a technical facility outside the current port area for the classification and parking of convoys is planned, which will avoid the interruption of rail traffic both at the Algeciras passenger station and at the port itself. To provide access to the facility, it is also planned to double the existing track from the Algeciras passenger station to the location chosen for the facility, which will be used exclusively for freight traffic to/from the port.

The work is co-financed by Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) funds.

The Port of Algeciras is the most important port in our country, with the 19% of the total cargo traffic of the 46 ports of general interest of the State en 2021. In addition, last year it was selected as the most efficient port in Europe and 10th in the world by the Container Port Performance Index (CPPI) ranking, created by the World Bank and the consulting firm IHS Markit.
