Ineco’s role

Ineco updated the Master Plan for Cartagena Airport, planning its enlargement until 2020. The increased traffic in the airport is linked to the industrial and tourism activity of the city, which is located on the shores of the Caribbean Sea, and whose walled historic centre has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO since 1984.

Through a team permanently based in the Cartagena de Indias Airport and the collaboration of different specialists of the company’s headquarters in Madrid, works have been carried out in Colombian airports from the Consultancy phase, defining and conducting the corresponding Blueprints and Designs and, subsequently, executing the follow-up and control of the Works, to the correct setting up of the new or reformed facilities.

With almost 4 million annual passengers, Cartagena Airport is the fourth largest in the country. In the last five years, the most notable works performed in Rafael Núñez International Airport in Cartagena de Indias were the Master Plan, the Terminal Functional Study, the Maximum Development Study and the New Site Study, and the following Designs and follow-up of the execution of its Works:

  • Enlargement and Remodelling of the Terminal.
  • Repair and overlay of the Runway.
  • New FBO Terminal.
  • New perimeter road for accessing the FBO.
  • Repair and adaptation of the Secondary Apron.
  • Overlaying and adaptation of the Main Apron.
  • New RFFS Building.
  • Enlargement of the Strip including redirecting the Juan Angola stream.

Alfonso Bonilla Airport in Cali is the third airport in terms of passenger and cargo transport in Colombia. In 2015, it transferred more than 5 million passengers and above 43,000 tonnes of cargo. The main work carried out in Cali Airport has consisted of the design of the New Terminal and the design of the Runway Overlaying Project and the supervision of its execution.

General aviation on the rise

In addition to the aforementioned interventions which are of vital importance in terms of aircraft safety, the increase in general aviation traffic was kept in mind. Private and military flights represent more than 90% of traffic at this airport, while the remaining percentage is represented by executive flights, school flights, etc. Although general aviation represents less than 1% of the total passengers who use this airport, it corresponds to 30% of airport operations and is expected to grow an average of 3.9% by 2020, totalling some 26,000 passengers and 14,000 operations.
