GIANT was born with the objective of implementing satellite navigation in the aeronautics sector. Ineco has carried out the consultancy works for this innovative project. 

As an acknowledged leader in the field of transport consultancy, with many years’ experience, Ineco is leading a consortium of 22 prominent companies in the air navigation sector, to coordinate the international GIANT project.

Ineco has carried out the consultancy procedures of this innovative project and was responsible for presenting it at numerous international conferences. The company received an award for best presentation in the aviation session at the ‘ION GNSS 2010’ conference held in Portland, USA, considered to be the most important satellite navigation event in the world.

Vertical guidance approach procedures

GIANT was designed to introduce satellite navigation to the aeronautics market, based on satellite vertical guidance known as APV/SBAS or LPV (Localizer Performance with Vertical guidance).

The project supports the introduction of Galileo and EGNOS into the European aviation sector, while maintaining the requisite operational security levels.


The GIANT project gradually introduces the GNSS system in three phases, making the transition to a system that is able to provide all the air navigation services required. In the initial phase, EGNOS is approved as a complement to existing operations: en route, in the terminal area and in arrivals and departures, with a second phase consisting of non-precision approaches with vertical guidance, and a final phase which will combine the use of Galileo and GPS, supported by regional integral systems (EGNOS) providing a unique services solution.

Operational and safety improvements

GIANT has had an extremely positive response, both from pilots and air traffic controllers, and also from equipment manufacturers and operators. The application has several advantages, including considerable improvement in operational safety, as greater cruising stability was noted during testing, and orientation during flight was smoother and more continuous.

Another important advantage of implementing GIANT is the cost saving aspect, as it is an extremely efficient instrument for airports, obviating the need for expensive outlay in installing ground systems.
