Air transport is doubly important in Cape Verde. Firstly, for domestic transport of residents – somewhat more than half a million – in a fragmented territory such as an archipelago. Secondly, for tourism, which constitutes 25% of the country’s GDP.

To handle this number of visitors, the public company ASA, which manages a network of seven airports, undertook a series of enlargement activities at the beginning of the decade using the services offered by Ineco. Following these works, Cape Verde went from having only a single international airport in 2005 to the four currently in operation: those of Sal, São Vicente, Praia (the capital) and Boa Vista, which has the heaviest tourist activity.

In addition to the enlargement and modernisation of the international airports of Boa Vista and Sal or the renovation of the tread surface at Praia international airport, Ineco worked on auditing the works on the passenger terminals at Boa Vista and Sal, as well as the Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) procedures for the international airports of Boa Vista and São Vicente; and the master plans for local aerodromes.

In 2012, ASA employed Ineco again to review and update the navigation easements across the entire network, and update the master plans for these four airports, which will dictate their future growth until 2030. Additionally, in 2014 ASA hired Ineco to draw up the master plans for the three domestic airports: Maio, Sâo Nicolau and Fogo, which also have a deadline in 2030.
