Ineco's technical office will provide an answer to the various challenges faced by the Port Authority of Tarragona (APT) and the Tarragona metropolitan area

Ineco has opened a technical office in the Port of Tarragona to support the development of an informative study on railway connections, with different proposals for the departure of the railway through the south. This office will make it possible to mange the different challenges facing the Tarragona Port Authority (APT) and the Tarragona metropolitan area, such as the promotion of rail transport as a more efficient and sustainable alternative for the transport of goods, in line with the decarbonisation objectives set by the EU for 2030. Likewise, one of its goals is to find solutions to remove the manoeuvres of the freight trains that provide a service to the Port from the maritime façade of the city of Tarragona, in order to minimise the inconvenience to residents and connect the Port with the general interest railway network to the south and, in the future, also connect with the new railway route through the interior.

The study will comprise three proposals arranged in three phases of development of the port's rail connections. In a first phase, the study will present a new connection between the East Docks  and the Adif marshalling yard. This new connection, by means of a railway bridge parallel to the current movable bridge and a new bridge over the mouth of the Francolí River, will connect the docks attached to the East shelter wall with the station and will eliminate the passage of trains through the Costa quay.

Phase 2 envisages the connection to the south of the La Boella intermodal terminal, with a new branch line that would start there, on the banks of the Andalusia and Cantabria quays and pass over the Salou-Tarragona motorway to connect with the industrial railway line "Linea FC 630", the former Tarragona-Valencia line. Finally, phase 3 contemplates the possibility of connecting this line with a branch line that would link the Salou-PortAventura station to the general interest railway network.
