Ineco has received international recognition for its expertise in BIM methodology after being named a finalist in the "Operations" category of the buildingSMART openBIM Awards 2026. Its project, "IFC as an Asset Information Model: A Scalable openBIM Approach", demonstrates how this technology can be applied to enhance the management and maintenance of infrastructure assets throughout their entire lifecycle.
The awards were presented during the buildingSMART International Summit in Tokyo, further strengthening Ineco's profile in the BIM field and highlighting its ability to bridge engineering and digital infrastructure management. The company was one of only four finalists worldwide in this category.
The project is built around a simple idea: ensuring that the information generated during the design and construction phases remains valuable once an infrastructure asset enters service. To achieve this, Ineco's methodology transforms as-built models into a practical tool for day-to-day asset management.
Based on the open IFC 4.3 standard, the solution automatically generates an inventory of infrastructure components and links each asset to its documentation, inspections and maintenance activities. This reduces manual tasks and provides easy access to structured, up-to-date information, supporting more informed decision-making.
The data can also be reused across geographic information systems (GIS), corporate applications and digital twins. In this way, the BIM model becomes a living source of information that supports the long-term management and preservation of infrastructure assets.
The buildingSMART openBIM Awards have recognised outstanding projects from around the world since 2014, celebrating the use of open standards to enable the sharing and effective use of information across buildings and infrastructure. The awards are organised by buildingSMART International, a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to driving the digital transformation of the built environment sector. The Operations category specifically recognises the application of openBIM in asset operation and management.
