Canada is advancing the largest infrastructure programme in its recent history with the development of its first High-Speed Rail (HSR) line. This new railway will connect the country's main urban and industrial centres along an approximately 1,000-kilometre corridor between Toronto and Quebec City, transforming intercity mobility, reducing journey times and providing a sustainable and efficient transport alternative for millions of passengers.
In this context, Ineco forms part of the technical advisory team led by the multinational engineering consultancy Ramboll, selected by Transport Canada to provide specialist expertise and technical support within the Alto High Speed Rail programme. The initiative is being delivered through a collaborative model involving Transport Canada, the public rail operator VIA Rail, the public corporation ALTO, responsible for the development and implementation of the network, and its private partner Cadence.
Technical Scope and Knowledge Transfer
Ineco’s contribution focuses on providing ongoing technical advice to the Canadian authorities during the early planning and definition stages of the project. The company’s work includes the analysis and definition of technical requirements, the review of regulatory and operational criteria, and specialist advisory services in the fields of safety, network design and systems integration.
This project strengthens Ineco’s presence in the Canadian market, where it has previously provided railway regulatory advisory services, while also enabling the company to export the expertise gained through more than three decades of developing Spain’s high-speed rail network. This experience is being applied to support the adaptation of proven standards of efficiency, sustainability and commercial operation to the regulatory and geographical context of North America.
Strengthening International Leadership in High-Speed Rail
Participation in the Canadian programme further consolidates Ineco’s track record in the development of new high-speed rail networks across strategic international markets. The company’s most notable international projects in this field include its role in the feasibility study and basic engineering design for Vietnam’s 1,541-kilometre North-South High-Speed Rail Line, technical advisory services to the public company CPK for the development of Poland’s "Y" high-speed rail network, and technical supervision and operational support for the Haramain High Speed Rail corridor linking Makkah and Madinah in Saudi Arabia.
