In its commitment to innovation and sustainability, Ineco has published a new report within the framework of Ineco Impulsa, developed from the creation of a new tool: CarbonTrack360. This web application has allowed, for the first time with this depth, the analysis of the environmental impact of mainland air transport and high-speed rail in Spain under a full life cycle approach.

Over the last three decades, Spain has undergone a major transformation of its transport infrastructure, driven by the expansion of the motorway network in the 1980s, the inauguration of key airport terminals, and the consolidation of high-speed rail. This modernisation, although essential, also entails a significant environmental impact. Therefore, understanding its implications is essential for designing truly sustainable transport policies.

CarbonTrack360 is not limited to measuring emissions during the operation of transport means. Its comprehensive approach includes all phases of the life cycle: from construction to maintenance, and soon also renovation and dismantling. Thanks to this, the new report offers a more realistic and useful perspective for strategic decision-making regarding the most appropriate transport systems to build a model of mobility that is as clean and green as possible.

The analysis shows that air transport concentrates the majority of its emissions in the operational phase, while high-speed rail, despite operating with 100% renewable energy since 2019 and generating practically zero emissions during service, presents a significant impact in its construction phase. Furthermore, the study shows that the climate efficiency of the train depends on reaching a sufficient cumulative demand over time, and key thresholds are identified that allow determining when a mode of transport becomes more efficient in terms of emissions.
