Ferrocarrils and Ineco to Drive Innovation, Research and Development in the Railway Sector

May 5, 2026

Ineco and Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC) have signed a collaboration agreement to jointly promote initiatives in innovation, research, development and knowledge dissemination in the railway sector.

The signing ceremony took place at FGC’s headquarters and was attended by the president of FGC, Carles Ruiz Novella, and the president of Ineco, Sergio Vázquez Torrón.

FGC president Carles Ruiz expressed his satisfaction with the agreement, stating that it “will allow us to continue moving forward and innovating with the aim of strengthening the railway system, which is currently the most sustainable transport alternative”. He added that cooperation between the two organisations “will enable us to further expand FGC’s partnerships with social stakeholders and institutions to promote sustainable mobility while at the same time improving people’s quality of life”.

For Ineco president Sergio Vázquez Torrón, “today we are signing more than an agreement; today we are strengthening an alliance between two public companies with extensive experience across all layers of the railway system. FGC is a benchmark in efficient railway operations, close to users and with a strong culture of innovation. Ineco brings proven technical capacity in planning, engineering and systems integration, as well as vast experience in major railway transformations in Spain and worldwide.” He described the partnership as “a natural and powerful alliance”.

The agreement, initially valid for four years with the possibility of extension, establishes a stable framework for collaboration between the two entities to foster knowledge exchange and the development of joint projects in the railway sector, a key pillar of more sustainable mobility.

Specifically, the agreement is structured around four main pillars: promotion, communication and institutional cooperation; training and capacity development; innovation and modernisation of the railway sector; and international cooperation and outreach.

To ensure the proper implementation of the agreement, a joint monitoring committee has been set up, comprising representatives from both organisations. The committee will meet regularly to oversee planned activities and ensure the agreement is correctly applied.

This partnership reinforces the commitment of FGC and Ineco to innovation, knowledge transfer and the continuous improvement of the railway system, contributing to the sector’s evolution and progress towards future sustainability and mobility goals.
