The digital transformation of engineering is no longer a future promise but a reality being built project by project. It is within this context that Illuminate 2026 Berlin took place, a conference held in Berlin (Germany) in which Ineco was one of the key contributors, delivering a presentation focused on integrating one of the most traditionally complex disciplines: geotechnics.

Presented by Héctor Salcedo, Specialist Projects Technician, the company delivered the paper “From boreholes to budget: Turning ground data into federated BIM”, demonstrating how tools such as Leapfrog Works, OpenRail Designer and OpenBuildings make it possible to transform dispersed information into coherent and usable three-dimensional models. The starting point is no small matter: thousands of data points from geotechnical investigations (site surveys, in situ and laboratory tests) which, once integrated, enable the creation of large-scale continuous ground models. From there, the process advances to the modelling of excavations, retaining structures and ground treatments, all connected within the BIM environment.

The methodology presented allows models to be directly linked to quantities and cost estimates, completing the cycle from geology through to the project’s financial planning. In this process, geotechnics ceases to be a peripheral discipline and becomes a central element of the digital model. The result is a more coherent, traceable and efficient system, with reduced errors and automated processes that were traditionally manual, an evolution pointing towards a paradigm shift in how infrastructure is conceived.

Bentley’s Illumination Day brought together professionals from engineering, consultancy and technology to explore the latest advances in digital solutions applied to infrastructure. It has established itself as a key forum for the exchange of knowledge and experiences, where companies and experts share real-world case studies and trends shaping the future of the sector.
