Europe moves towards a more efficient ERTMS deployment with Ineco’s support
The European Commission has published the study “ERTMS Trackside Deployment: Analysis of Cost Drivers”, to which Ineco contributed alongside EY-Parthenon and Blue Arches within the framework of the Deployment Management Team (DMT). The report analyses the main factors influencing the cost of deploying the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) and proposes measures to improve deployment efficiency and accelerate its roll-out across the European rail network.
In this regard, the report highlights two key messages: the need to harmonise the system and industrialise deployment processes in order to accelerate ERTMS implementation and move towards genuine interoperability across the European rail network; and the importance of reducing deployment costs, particularly on the infrastructure side, as even small efficiency gains can have a significant impact given the scale of the investment planned across Europe.
Ineco contributed its technical expertise to the analysis of the main challenges associated with implementing the system and to identifying potential improvements to optimise its deployment at European level. The study’s conclusions provide a technical basis to support decision-making and help move towards a more interoperable, efficient and coordinated European rail network.
The European Commission and the DMT presented the study’s main findings during a webinar for the sector, which addressed both the factors affecting costs and potential solutions for making ERTMS deployment more efficient. The session also included the participation of Ineco expert Silvia Domínguez, ERTMS Manager. The report’s findings and recommendations will also be presented at InnoTrans 2026, where they will continue to be analysed and discussed by key stakeholders from across the European rail sector.

More than a decade supporting ERTMS deployment in Europe
Since 2015, Ineco has been working with the European Commission as part of the team responsible for supporting and coordinating the deployment of ERTMS across the European rail network. Ineco provides specialised technical advice, monitors projects and contributes to ensuring that the system is implemented in a coordinated and interoperable manner across Europe’s main rail corridors.
