Bicycle continues to take a central place in mobility and tourism in Spain thanks to Spain by Bike, the new platform that has brought together in a single portal more than 300 cycle routes.” The initiative, promoted by the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility within the framework of the State Strategy for the Bicycle (EExB), has had the technical support of Ineco, which has assisted the ministry in the design and development of the project.
The website has overcome the fragmentation of dispersed resources (such as Greenways, Natural Paths, Eurovelo, or regional initiatives) and has established itself as a key tool to promote cycle tourism. With unified selection and difficulty criteria, it allows users to check the type of route for each section, view elevation profiles on an interactive map, download tracks in GPX format, or report geolocated incidents. Cycling passes, MTB areas, and a category of major routes over 600 kilometres have also been incorporated.
Iván Villarrubia, Ineco consultant providing technical support to the General Bicycle Office, presented the initiative at the Pedal Spain Cycle Tourism Fair, held in Zaragoza. During his intervention, he outlined the key aspects of Spain by Bike and detailed the upcoming developments: integration of bicycle rental services, a form to propose new routes, calculation of recommended itineraries, an option to save favourite routes, and connection with the Maps of Spain application.
In 2022, Ineco presented the report The Bicycle in the City, which delved into the possibilities of this mode of transport destined to occupy a leading role in urban mobility.
