The Railway Museum has hosted the initiative 'Niñas al Tren de la Ciencia y la Tecnología’ with the aim of inspiring the new generation of railway professionals and promoting gender equality in a sector where most of them are men. Promoted by the Fundación de los Ferrocarriles Españoles (FFE), the day consisted of an interactive workshop aimed at a group of 50 students aged between 10 and 11, with the purpose of introducing them to the railway world and promoting STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) vocations.

One of those in charge of sharing her experience was Carmen Rodenas, engineer at Ineco and volunteer in the ConCiencia programme set up by the company to inspire scientific and technological vocations in schools.

Carmen, with an outstanding career in the sector, has shown the opportunities offered by the railway world, with special emphasis on the role of women in this field.

The workshop was characterised by being dynamic and close, starting with a brief introduction to the railway world and the different professions that make up this sector. In addition, the students, with the help of drawings, asked their questions and expressed their perceptions on the subject.

Finally, several professionals answered questions about what education is necessary to work in the railway world, what challenges women face in this profession and how girls or teenagers can be interested in careers in science or railway technology.

This format aims to eliminate stereotypes and promote an inclusive and accessible environment for students. The aim is not only to raise young people's awareness of the railway sector, but also to promote an awareness based on innovation, technology and transport, which is so necessary today.

This project is supported by the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) of the Ministry of Science and Innovation.
