New Guadramiro radar boosts weather monitoring in northwest Spain, enhancing detection of severe rainfall and adverse phenomena
The Spanish Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has held an institutional event to monitor the final phase of construction of the new weather radar at the Guadramiro heliport facilities (Salamanca). The event was chaired by the Secretary of State for the Environment, Hugo Morán, and AEMET’s President, María José Rallo. This new infrastructure is part of the plan to renew and modernize AEMET’s national radar network, in which Ineco is actively involved.
The upcoming commissioning of this radar represents another milestone in the project to renew, expand, and modernize the weather radar network, aimed at improving territorial coverage and the early detection of adverse weather phenomena. The plan includes the renewal of 15 existing radars and the installation of three new stations at strategic locations across the country.
Representing Ineco at the inauguration were Luis Nieto, Project Director; Francisco Olmedo, Deputy Director of the Enaire and Airports Account; and Jorge Cruz, Deputy Director of Works. The company has collaborated with AEMET in various phases of the project, including drafting technical designs, managing construction, and supervising the supply of the new state-of-the-art dual-polarization radar equipment, leveraging its expertise in complex, highly specialized technological infrastructures.
The new Guadramiro radar will strengthen meteorological monitoring capabilities in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula and enhance the detection and tracking of heavy rainfall and other adverse phenomena. This information will be crucial for issuing more accurate weather warnings and supporting decision-making in areas such as civil protection, aviation, and emergency management.
