Innovation to Predict Air Pollution

October 10, 2025

Javier de Andrés Villarroya, one of the winners of Ineco's 2025 Innovation Call, is developing DART-AI (Drones for Atmospheric Reporting and Tracking with Artificial Intelligence). A proposal that combines drones and artificial intelligence to monitor and predict atmospheric pollution.

The main objective of the system is to improve the quality and detail of the data that already exists in the European reference models: Copernicus' CAMS (Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service), a service that provides data and forecasts on the composition of the atmosphere (air quality, gases, etc.) and the ECMWF (European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts), an organisation that runs medium-range weather prediction models. With DART-AI, the information will be more precise and useful, providing more comprehensive data to help make better decisions in environmental management.

The system combines 3 elements:

• Drones equipped with sensors to measure in real-time the presence of pollutants and particles in the air.
• Processing through artificial intelligence, which analyses and refines the collected data.
• Prediction algorithms, capable of anticipating the dispersion and evolution of pollutants in different scenarios.

Thanks to this technological integration, DART-AI will allow large cities, such as Madrid, not only to know the current location of pollution but also to anticipate where it will move, thus improving the ability to plan and respond to pollution episodes.
With proposals like this, Ineco reinforces its commitment to innovation applied to sustainable development and the improvement of quality of life in our cities.
