The IRINA project, part of the European SESAR programme, has established itself as a strategic initiative to advance the safe integration of Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) into the European Union’s airspace.

Over the past three years, Ineco has played a key role in this project, leading the safety-related activities within one of its two main research lines —the insertion of RPAS into controlled airspace Classes A to C— while also providing specialised support for integration in airspace Classes D to G.

In the final phase of the project, Ángela Abad, expert from the Air Safety Management team, took part in the IRINA Stakeholder Workshop 2026, held in Brussels. During the event, she presented the results of the operational safety analysis carried out by Ineco’s team, which also includes Rodrigo Beltrán, Pablo Menéndez-Ponte, and Santiago Cervera. The work focused on two essential elements for ensuring the safe integration of these aircraft into controlled airspace: the command and control link (C2L) and the Detect and Avoid (DAA) system, which is vital for preventing mid-air collisions. Her presentation covered the most critical threats identified, the mitigation measures proposed by the consortium, and the main areas for improvement that will need to be addressed in the next phase of the project, IRINA2.

In this new stage, Ineco will continue contributing its expertise in operational safety, strengthening its position in the field of innovative air mobility. The company has incorporated the use of drones as a key tool in its projects and is a founding member of SIAM, the first national cluster dedicated to promoting this sector. Its ongoing work in enhancing standards, supporting regulatory development and advancing the U-Space system at both national and European level has positioned Ineco as a benchmark in the safe integration of new air mobility solutions.
