Ineco has hosted the event "Digitalisation of the Built Environment: Standardisation and Practical Applications of BIM-GIS Integration" in its Ágora room, promoted by the Spanish Association for Standardisation (UNE) and the Metropolitan Agency of Barcelona. The event, in workshop format, has brought together experts and professionals from the sector to discuss and share knowledge about the integration of BIM-GIS as a key aspect in the digitalisation of the built environment throughout its life cycle, as a starting point for the creation of a specific standard.

The welcome was given by Aitor Aragón, Secretary of CTN-UNE 332/SC2, and Jorge Torrico, as Digital Engineering and BIM Manager at Ineco, in which they highlighted the importance of this type of specialist meetings for the convergence of these two fields, BIM and GIS, so closely related.

Next, Jorge Torrico, Digital Engineering and BIM Manager, delivered a presentation on the challenges and hurdles for achieving true convergence. The integration of BIM-GIS is not a technological trend, but an operational and strategic necessity to improve efficiency, transparency, and sustainability in asset management. Of course, it requires overcoming technical, organisational, and cultural challenges. With more than 15 years of experience in BIM development, the company supports various public entities in their implementation processes, and the connection with technologies such as GIS and digital twins.

Montserrat Monteagudo, Director of Cartographic Innovation Projects, and María Duran, BIM manager, both from the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona, have provided an analysis on the suitability of official cartographic bases for their integration into the BIM methodology.

The session included participatory workshops where key topics such as the content of the standard on BIM-GIS information exchange were discussed.

In the afternoon, the meeting of Subcommittee 2 of CTN-332 on BIM-GIS Information Exchange took place. The Spanish Association for Standardisation (UNE), of which Ineco has been a member since 2017, plays a key role in the development of the economy through the drafting of technical standards and international cooperation activities. As the only Standardisation Body in Spain, UNE promotes the development of quality infrastructure, fostering the transfer of knowledge and the strengthening of companies.
