The Minister of Public Works, Ana Pastor, has announced a package of 20 new measures concerning rail safety and a review of protocols,  in the wake of the train accident in Santiago de Compostela.

During her speech, Ana Pastor remembered the victims and wished to thank and acknowledge the great work of all those involved in the emergency operation, among whom she mentioned  Ineco professionals.

In her appearance before the Public Works Committee in Parliament,  Ana Pastor analysed the causes of the accident and outlined the actions already underway. She also set out  the new measures that the Ministry will take in order to ensure safe rail transport.

With regard to the measures that are already being applied, the most notable is the installation of markers and signs along the section of the line where the accident took place, the setting up of the Scientific and Technical Committee and comprehensive auditing of the rail system.

The action plan defined by the Ministry includes a review of the speed limits and line signalling, a commitment to developing the ASFA digital safety system further and studying the possibility of applying GPS systems in train driving.

Other proposals concern improvements in the control of rolling stock, passenger safety and issues of an organisational and regulatory nature.
